【About the program】
“Bisikan Monsoon” uses Nanyang as a creative springboard. Through the lenses of the performers, it revisits the significance of Nanyang to modern day youth. As second, third or perhaps even fourth generation Chinese Malaysian, how do they perceive the stories of their ancestors who migrated south? Are they curious about these stories? Do they even care? What do they think of their oft-neglected family history? As China rises as a global power, our collective status has changed from being the Nanyang Chinese to overseas Chinese. What are their reflections on this subtle change in identity? And what is their identity in this tropical country where they were born and bred?
By combing through family histories and collective memories of life in Nanyang, the production team hopes to re-examine and question the realities of being Malaysian, and to explore what the “new” Nanyang means to the younger generation. There exists detailed documentation, in literature and in records kept by Chinese community associations, of a longing for the “Motherland” in the past. However, the narrative in contemporary Chinese Malaysian writings has long since considered Nanyang our home. This change in identity has never been examined and dissected on stage until now.
“Bisikan Monsoon” highlights the voices of the younger generation and lets them tell their own stories. This new perspective of Nanyang represents a stark departure from how their forefathers viewed this land. Using dance theatre as a medium, “Bisikan Monsoon” traces the heritage of the Chinese Malaysian and reconnects the struggles faced by the younger generation with that of their ancestors. Only by knowing their roots, can they better express their identities and showcase their own histories to the world, stories that have only just begun.
【About the Company】
Kwang Tung Dance Company, previously known as Kwang Tung Dance Troupe, was established 38 years ago on 15th June 1980. It was renamed Kwang Tung Dance Company in 2010.
The company’s initial focus was on folk dances, but it later evolved to focus on contemporary dance. The company hopes to revamp its operations, from a cultural troupe under a community association to a more systematic, professional dance company with a competitive culture, recognised for its distinct styles.
Since its establishment, the company has been devoted to promoting the local dance scene and nurturing dancers, aiming to create an accessible platform for amateur dancers to express themselves at a professional level. To promote original work and professional choreography, it often collaborates with international and local artists. In addition to working with dancers, the company has also undertaken cross-disciplinary collaborations with artists from other fields. Through such creative collaborations, it hopes to broaden the horizons of the company’s dancers, improving their skills and dance vocabulary, as well as enrich the company’s in-house choreographic styles.
The company was previously awarded Best Group Performance, Best Performer, Best Choreographer and more by the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, organised by Kakiseni for its outstanding performances. The company has travelled and performed in Singapore, Korea, Guangzhou (China) and Germany.
