Looking back, the dances of yore remain vivid; standing in the present, this body still explores. Time, in its passage, has never worn away the original aspiration—instead, it has woven deeper meaning into its core. This is both a tribute to the classic through reproduction, and a wholly new reinterpretation. Past and present, intertwining and resonating, forge a dialogue that delves into time, memory, and dance’s very essence. In this moment, dancers and audience alike bear witness: dance transcends time, breathing life into eternity in a fleeting instant.
Bird Song (1992)

Description: Bird Song was premiered in 1990 with the City Contemporary Dance Company in Hong Kong. It was then re-staged with the Youth Dance Troupe of the Beijing Dance Academy in 1992 while same year, Bird Song became the debut performance of the establishment of the Guangdong Experimental Dance Company. The piece consists of six sections: Song of the Canyon, Song of the High Mountain, Song of the Field, Song of the River, Song of the Waterfall and Song of the Sky, depicting the path of mankind transforming from realm of necessity to realm of freedom.

Description: Upon Calligraphy is a poem of movements, which are developed from the stylistic essence of different Chinese scripts. The acuteness and tardiness of the bone script, the elegance of the seal script, the harmony of the official script; the strength of the regular script, and the expressiveness and freeness of the cursive script underline respectively the paragraphs of the dance. The passage of movements from slow and delicate to quick and expressive corresponds to the path of development of Chinese writing or communication in general. Writing then conveys not only the symbolic meanings of the words but also the temperament and feelings of the person through the brush strokes.

Description: Stick figure is a common tool dance students use to record dance. Same is true for Sang Jijia since he started dance training at the age of 12. As time went by, stick figures have even become a medium to think and tell stories. Sticks is an animated stick figure tale Sang tells from his life long passion and fantasy on dance.
